1) Several days ago I was asking about the hardware and torque specs. for mating the case halves. Now that I am about to actually do it, I am a little bit confused as to what to use a sealant. The guy at the local shop sold me a can of Gaskacinch, but it seems you all prefer Yamabond, Permatex, etc. I want to do this job tomorrow and I already have the Gaskacinch. Is this okay?
2) I am installing a Berg (Schadek)oil pump and full-flow system. The Berg pump has a groove near the rear of the pump (part that sits closest to cam shaft) and it came with a rubber o-ring that seems to fit this groove. I thought I remembered a thread somewhere that mentioned that there should be no gasket used in this spot. The Berg directions make no mention of this O-ring. Should I use it? The pump that originally came with this engine has no such groove.
Thanks and sorry for being so long-winded.

Your memory is right, but doesn't apply in this case. That thread was talking about the groove in the pump cover plate, which gets no oring. The Berg pump has been machined for an o ring on the pump body, to keep from sucking air around the cover plate. Use the oring when you install it.
Gaskacinch will work, permatex 3-h will work, most anything will, when it comes down to it. If you want to go buy yamabond or curil or something, fine, they're all good products too, but you will be fine with what you have. When I tore down the engine in my T-3 it was sealed w/ plain blue RTV silicon, and hadn't been leaking. So, your call.

DO NOT use any kind of RTV sealant on case halves! I used RTV sealant the first time I built my motor and I effectively shortened case life by at least half by doing this. RTV does not completely "squish out" when you torque the case together and thus keeps the main bearing journals from completely butting up against each other. This, of course, causes the main bearing saddles to "shuffle" (no matter how good your crank is) and ruins the case. Use Gasacinch/Curil/Permatex Aviation only in a very thin coat. Best wishes!

Agreed, do not use RTV...that was just an example of what some do. I didn't find any indications of shuffling or any excessive wear on the case I mentioned, however.

Gaskacinch is an effective sealer but I wouldn't use it on case halves. Especially if your new at this and want to take your time. The stuff stinks like PVC cement and sets up pretty quick. A better choice would be Permatex 3-H Aviation Form-a-gasket (and only one side please). I'm gonna try the 518 on mine which is another option.

i' ve used many times silicon on case halves.
it is not the best but it works if you are fast to torque the case.
i' ve reopened cases with silicon (and also with other sealants) and the problem appears only if people is slow to close the case.
now i use a green stuff of an italian brand.
it is like grease and it takes a pair of days to cure, not 15 minutes like silicon. Peppe

I hate it when the little bottle of permatex falls over arghh, the brush is handy though..can be a bit thick for some bits.
Have used Loctite 518 on everything aircooled or watercooled, Never had a problem with it, It's easy to apply with the tube.

I have always been told NEVER to use a sealant that will fully harden ie a silicane based one. The stuff that squishes out inside the case will harden and may block oil ways. use a non-setting one.
