WBX 2.1 76mm crank in a T1

Post by Pillow »

Anyone running a WBX 2.1 76mm crank in their T1 motor?

I am heavily leaning to a 1904 (74x90.5) for my bus engine and figure that if a 76mm WBX crank will work that it would be a lot cheaper and a darn good crank for the bottom end.

Apparently the #1 main bearing needs clearanced for a T4 #1 main bearing, but all the other mains are the same as a T1. T1 rod journals are already there on the 76mm crank so no problem there. The cylinder offset is perfect for a T1 as well.

Basically the WBX is a T1 that is watercooled, the case internals are very similar to the T1 and stuff.

In theory I could get a AL case from aircooled.net and have all the machine work done for the #1 bearing right off the bat. As well as opening the jug holes for 90.5As and full flowing the case.

I am still torn on the Birals from Shad with JE forged pistons. Half of me says that the 90.5s are robust enough as cast steel. Then the other half says if you go Biral just get 94s because they are so much better with heat transfer. Then again why get JE forged if you are not running high CR or any "power-adders"... Soooo many variables to think about!

Then again why bother and just build an el cheepo 1914 and keep blowing it up every 30K Image

I think the wasser uses differnt main bearings. I dont know if its the case or the crank. Demello or Kimco should be able to turn your crank if it needs it to make it fit the T1 case..

I found a lot of good information on the Drag Racers & Speed Forum in the archives.

It seems very possible to use the WBX crank, but the T1 case must be machined for a T4 #1 bearing(flywheel). After I get my hands on a WBX crank I will be better able to give spacifics on what will work.

Seems that two people on the board ran/run this setup. Both in a bus which is exactly what I am thinking about for a 1955cc.

A guy in the UK created this conversion, Laurie Pettit. I spoke to him and he said he uses all standard T1 bearings and a three piece T25 waterboxer rear main (flywheel end). This means when the endfloat gets to big, you can take the flywheel off and replace the thrust washer and reset endfloat and your away with no case spliting.

I forgot to say you need to machine the case to fit the bearing and gouge a new oil way.
