Starter Troubles

Except for the self-supporting models (like automatic-trans cars use) you can't bench-test a VW starter unless it's bolted into a trans housing with a good bushing in it or properly supported on a test fixture made for the purpose. Without something to center the armature it may turn (slowly) or simply lay there and smoke.
