Parts swapping?

Post by albersondh »

Ok I have an oppertunity to buy a 67 bug that has been choped and has a sunroof for 450$. Of course its completly striped no motor, trany, interior, paint, just a body. It has a pan from a 69 which is an IRS right? I have a 71 ghia that I want to swap all the parts over to the bug. Parts being front disc brakes rear disc brakes "kit", shocks, motor, tranny, 4 lug wheels. Is this compatable from a 71 Ghia to a 69 bug pan, Im pretty sure it is but I want reassurance. Also how much does a 67 bug weigh and would the 69 pan make it heavier?? Thanks

Ghia floorpans are wider then bugs. That'll require some modifications if you want to swap chassis. It probably would be easier to put the brakes, engine, etc into the bug instead of trading chassis.

'69 does have IRS and balljoints.

Weight doesn't really matter unless you wanna do serious racing. At least that's my opinion.

Ok I see. I didnt mean I wanted to swap chasis. I did just want to swap the parts over and you said I could thanks. I do want to do some serious racing so weight does matter to me I have heared that the Ghia 71 weighs about 2000LBS and the bug weighs about 1700?? does this sound correct??

Ghia's about 2030 with a driver, give or take. A bug's weight differ, the earlier the lighter, on average I'm guessing 1700-1850 stock.

I've never done a Ghia disc swap before but it should be straightforward, just make sure you use the Ghia's calipers as well. Or just swap out the entire front end (balljoint suspension) instead, maybe easier?
