Help Needed... Enigine running poorly

I just finished putting together my 1600 in my dune buggy.
Everything seemed to be fine just running it in neutral in my garage.
When I took it out for a spin the engine would go great for about 20 feet then it will drop to an idle. A couple seconds later it will start going again without changing my position on the throttle...
Could my fuel pump be damaged or wore out? Would a bad fuel pump do this? I checked my fuel line and it seems fine.
I would appreciate any help I can get.

could be any of the following, timing off, dwell incorrect, plugged carb jets, vaccum leak, float level out of adjustment???

Just check each item will tou find the cause,,, I sould start with the fuel lines, then carb.... Oh it might be just old stale gas!!!!!
