The AS41 and Cast 74mm crank came with lots of work(full flowed,shufflepinned,case savers, welded,clearanced for 74crank, cut for 90.5's........but i want to have a daily driver that maximizes the efficiency for this size crank/piston size.
I got a good deal on the case/crank and would like to put the extra $'s saved into the correctly sized heads, carbs,cam for the job.
1-would i be better off having stock heads ported to keep the intake velocity fast for better low end ooomph....or jump to a slightly larger valve/head combo?
2- In order to run a cam that allows the 74 crank to perform best in the lower rpm ranges under 4500---would it make sense to run a higher compression (b pistons etc) to bring some life to the low end power of the setup? I would like to maintain the flexibility to run lower octane during the year and then have the option of running higher octane for longer driving or hotter days in the summer.

I just spoke with a great builder who said the only problem with the cast crank is on drag starts(dropping clutch and lighting em up) and spinning it over 5k. Other than that-his take was that if its balanced it will be fine for a mild setup.
I plan on keeping it stock compression roughly and running 041 heads and porting them slightly and using dual weber 40's-mild header and single quiet pack(cuz i just bought it new for the 1600)
My only concern was picking the right cam. The 110 sounds good but wonder what rpm band that is good for? is it 2-5k? Id like to stay with something strong right off idle up to 4500 but dont seem to have any luck finding rpm bands for Berg or other cam options.

2000- 5500 is about what the 110 falls in. 30 mpg would be typical, depends on how you drive it. Depends on Carbs. I was using dual 40mm Webers. Weber ITCs get very poor milage. K dogs will do well. The cast will hold up as you said for mild use, I've seen too many loose the threads where the gland nut goes when torqued down.
