Hi Folks,
I've started an album with a few pictures of fenders I've modified without any welding using the existing metal. So far just Ghia and 914, but a fatter Bug fender is in the works also. This can be done with a ballpeen hammer, a thrift store leather purse full of sand, and a hammer and dolly. Anything from undetectable widening for slightly wider wheels and tires to 2" plus of flare is possible with this technique. I'm shooting a video of the process. After watching the video, I think anyone should be able to get good results with the simple methods described.
I just had 10 guys pounding away on a 914 who have never done this before...everyone picked up the skills quickly. They were contributing to a community flare project for a fellow 914 owner striken with ALS. He wants to leave a nice car for his children.
It is all about pounding and smoothing...pretty simple stuff once you see it. Far less difficult than other forms of metalshaping.

would this work?
I checked out your site and the pics. Damn nice work. What do you think about this idea? I want to add 2" to my rear fenders. I got an extra pair and was planning to cut a 2" section from them (from the body side)and add it to the existing fenders them smooth them out. Do you think this would work? Or would the curves be to much to deal with. This will be my first time trying this.
thanx

Hi Rob,
I'm doing some Bug fenders for my video. 2" in the rear should be easy. Cutting, welding, grinding, filling or metal-finishing is a lot more difficult than pounding and smoothing especially for a beginner. I will be adding the Bug fender pictures to the album in the next several weeks.
