Ignition Problem? Help!

Post by loopole »

i was cruising down the highway a couple of days ago, engine mildly loaded, running great and i get a miss, gradual at first and then it just progressively gets worse. Right now the engine will fire right up, it will give 3 or 4 good revs, sounds great, then on about the fifth rev it will start cutting out, then if you hold the throttle at like 2-3k it will only run on one or two cylinders. If you shut if off for a few minuites it will do the exact same thing, doesnt matter if the engine is cold or hot. I can not isolate it being on either bank of cyls. I pulled carbs, took them apart, blew everything out, they were very clean. I checked flow of fuel to carbs, both sides, good strong pumps when cranking. Carburation doesnt really make sense since if the engine sits for a little while it will run strong initially, i also changed all the plugs. I am assuming it must be my compufire or my coil, or possibly a resistor in a plug wire? any thoughts?

I think you're on the right track with plugs etc. Can you put the stock ignition system back on to see if the compufire might be at faut?

I had a brand new coil fail (and an old one). They will heat up when loaded but may not show symptoms at an idle. My bus ran down the block fine before quitting and would fire right back up after a very short cool down. Drove me nuts analyzing what seemed like a fuel problem!
