I've never seen a guide in chopping a type 3 myself. Stop by
www.volkrods.com/forums there's someone there that chopped a square years ago (can't rememebr who though) and someone else who's thinking about doing one soon (lilbill). But generally on chopping cars, for every 3 inch you chop you need to add 1 inch to the length, or something like that. So you may need a donor roof or slant back the windshield to compensate.
I have a few chop squares in my site:

Kid Dean of Dean and son did one back in the late 80's or early 90's. I think Hot Vws covered how he did it in a series of articles, but that was a while ago. On his he reshaped the rear deck lid to make it work out, and went to one piece rear side windows. You might try looking thru Hot Vw's site or try contacting Dean and son for more info. I hope this helps.

Keith (Kid) Dean is the builder. We have swapped emails some and his dad "Dick" too. Both nice folks. That car lives in Houston TX now. Lloyd Sandel of the Surf House owns it. it is surf (board) shop.

My buddy has chopped the roof on his squareback 5-1/2".There was an article in hot VW's(March 1984)which is what he used.It wasn't as hard as one might think. The best part is that you don't need a doner roof,as the roof remains intact and doesn't need any sectioning.Shoot him an email,he'll probably send some pics.
