can i use an electric random orbit sander for doing basic body work, or do i need a true dual action sander (which seem to usually be air powered)?

Yes you can i have used ele.ctric palm sanders and rotory sanders before and they worked good. Some sanders are just faster than others.Have fun and good luck.
