Question about shot bags

Post by Plastermaster »

How do you use them? I cant figure if you hold it over the dent and wack it, or do you hold it over the dent and hammer the backside for the dent?

Hi Ron,

A shotbag is used in conjunction with a hammer to stretch metal...not something you need in standard body work. It absorbs the blow of the hammer or mallet. You hit metal a lot ending up with a lumpy piece that needs smoothing. A number of ways to do that...english wheel, hammer and dolly, planishing hammer, modified vice grips... Here is an article with a bit about dent repair buried in all of the welding talk:

A set of dollies would probably be better than a bag for dent repair. They are a bit more forgiving. If you hit too hard with the shot bag then you just made a bigger dent in the other direction...
