Respirator

Hey all. Here's a quick one. I've noticed all the dual cartridge respirators (AO Safety) that I see for sale, state on the package not to use them for sandblasting. I use cheapo play sand from Wally-world for media (just chock-full of silica dust) and I wear a 3M particulate mask. I've seen guys blasting in commercial settings wearing like the space suit deal with the fresh air hose and all. Makes me wonder if the 3M mask isn't enough. I'm working outside so should I be concerned?

I don't do any blasting, but I were my dual cart resp when sanding, painting, welding, grinding. It seals and filters so much better than those cheapie masks. Why not? :)

Hello,
Without proper testing it is hard to say whether or not you are getting proper coverage. In my experience AO Safety does not make a good product when it comes to respirators. A 3M or North will afford you a much better protection. Make use of cartridges with HEPA/Particulate protection, preferable in conjunction with a pre-filter (cotton woven type) My blasters wear the "space age" setup with supplied air - full encapsulate protection. Silica WILL damage your lungs enough will kill you - quite similar to asbestos and we all know how harmful that is.

If you have more specific questions I would be glad to help just email me. I am a Health and Safety professional by trade.

I have a full beard. I have always used a paper dust mask when I have hand sanded. Will I need a forced air set up as described by webs1302s for media blasting and painting?

Thanks,
Randy

Seasons Greetings gang,
I went to my body shop to see how our '57 bug was coming along and got dizzy just walking in the door.
I asked my buddy (the bodyman) what he uses and he said that he filters the fumes with a burning cigarette.
I hope he was kidding but knowing him he wasn't.
He is a real bone head

You can't get a proper seal with a beard, you might as well not wear anything because you will have the same protection. To do a proper fit test you need to be clean shaven - Check into your Niosh regs.

Yes or a RACAL system. Only thing with hoods is costs for scrubbers and such - most do it yourselfers are trying to save money. It would be easier and cheaper to shave.
