what should it cost?

Post by JakeAce »

I have 66 notch and im looking to have the outside repainted. Its really in good shape no major rust lots of dings and skufs. Any rust that is present can be sanded and bondoed. What do you think it would cost roughley? I know its a hard question for not beaing able to see it but give me a rough guess or experiences. Im not looking for perfection just something that looks good and will saty on the car for like 3 or 4 years. Till i can do it right. Ooh ya and im gunna have them replace the window seals.

Depending on how rough it looks just degrease it, wet sand and clear coat it to freshen it up a bit.

I really don't care for temporary paint jobs - had to strip too many of those way too soon. Wait and do it the way you want it. I am a huge fan of the OG or rat lookers too though.

Maaco (yeah, I said it ) has a special for $299 right now that is actually ok - not great, but ok. If you just gotta do something quick & dirty they are as good as anybody. We call those McPaint jobs but the local shop ain't too bad - YMMV

Hay Rescue,

I took my 67 to Maaco when I first got it just so I can have one color on it until I restored it. The guy told me that VW?s where too hard to paint and they wouldn?t do it for that price. They wanted to charge me time and labor for an OK or less paint job.

I like your idea of cleaning it up better. Also, a good polishing with a power buffer and light cut compound could make it look like new again.

Whoa, that is nuts :D

I've had the local shop do some work and they have always done me right. Did they say what made a VW so difficult?

Ya,

They said it was too round, too may nooks and crannies and too much masking. I took it to other places and received similar comments including one guy telling me he would not touch it for less that $2500. I ended up painting it myself and in my opinion, I somewhat had to agree with the professionals. Check out this thread at the Samba http://www.thesambaforums.com/forum/vie ... ight=maaco

That ain't good. I had a '79 white trash mobile Firebird shot there last year for that price and it was definitely not show quality but spiffied it up quite a bit. I did lots of prep first though.

How that shop could advertise $189 and then turn around and say $3795 I have no idea. I'd call the franchise HQ and whine :D

Buy a decent HVLP setup and shoot it yourself - still be less than half of that.

I would like to wait and just do it right but.... Its been sitting for like 3 years and the seal rubber for the widows needs replacing. So i thought well if im having that done i should fix the rust thats under the ribber. Then i thought well its not in that bad of shape so it shouldent be that much to just paint the whole thing?

This is my experence on geting a bug painted. Go to a place that has never worked on a bug and have them give you a quote. then they have to stick to it. Thats what i did and i got mine painter for 750 including the rims. And my bug had holes i could fit my fist through. Of course its not show quality but im not complaning.

Shooting a bug isn't that tough... it's polishing near the rear windows that stumps body guys --- there's the region that mechanicals can't fit into.

I've had a few cars shot at Maaco.... I"d do my own prep and have them do a final clean and shoot.

If you remove the window rubber it will really help them out... then it's a back mask and not masking around the windows... you'll also ant the ledges painted.

The Maaco jobs aren't excellent --- but for single stage paint it's a fairly good deal.

If your working with a good base to start why not do it right the first time instead of spending extra money to do it twice.

the reason I dont wait is this. I have two cars ones in the shop becouse of an accident and as soon as it get back i have to leave my notch at a friends. Do to the fact my mom wont let me keep another car infront of the house. So im trying to get my notch in running leakproof order so if its left out side it wount rust more and ruin the inside. Plus i dont have the money to do it the right right way. Meaning a total pan up resto. So i just need something nice that will last me acouple of years till I can do it right.
