I've heard nothing but bad things. Sorry. If I were you, I'd visit Jake Raby's site. http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/Home_Page.htm

GEX???
Besides - VW Trends (in my opinion) is WAY better than the other magazine out there. The other mag is 80 % adds and 20% substance. Plus SouteastVW has been big in getting the TYPE 4 articles in VWT that are coming out in the next few months - including a spotlight on Jakes Twin Plug heads.
Anyways - just my 2 cents worth - I'll get off the soap box now.

GEX???
i always like Hot Vw's better but if trends has a type 3 on the cover i'll buy it. Trends always seemed to have too much water for my taste. But i'm get the copies with jakes engine stuff so....
Back to the real topic: I wouldn't buy an engine from them, but as for regular parts they can't be taht bad. I did buy a new weber kit from them for my fasty and haven't had any problems.

GEX???
I haven't heard any good about GEX in the last 10 years or so. I had the opportunity to talk to some ol' timers and they said that initially GEX had good engines, but their quality has gotten progressively worse.
The shop I worked at had GEX engines and I was not comfortable selling them. We had too many returns and exchanges. We eventually quit selling them, as we were losing money on them.
There are many more smaller, and reputable, builders out there. If building yourself is out of the question, then talk to one of them. Do yourself a favor, do your homework. Know what you want, but don't expect to get it at GEX's price. Quality costs.

GEX???
As for the American magazines, I've noticed that VW Trends in the last couple of years has been improving their content. HotVWs has pretty much stayed at the same level.
I just found myself becoming bored with the usual content. How many 1776 Type 1 buildups can we tolerate? How many resto-custom Bugs and Busses do we need to see? I wanted something different and for the last year it's been the UK's TotalVW. The content is new for me (seeing as I've never been to the UK) and they aren't afraid to feature "oddball" cars like bay-window Busses, Vanagons, and 411/412s.
To both of the American VW magazine publishers: look to the European magazines for ideas. We need fresh content. Don't be afraid to feature more German Look Beetles (esp. the Supers, as the coverage has been lacking), more bay Window busses('68-'79) and any other uniquely restored/customized VW. Don't just follow the trends, start them.
To the VWTrends publisher: I am looking forward to seeing the expanded coverage of the Type 4 tech series. Keep it coming. I might even get a subscription.

A-HA-MEN BROTHER !!
good lord - how many more sets of 8 spoke empis/5spoke empis - engine build-ups/1776 dyno tests.........50 essential tools "ya gotta have"......agghhhhh....
<< ent. How many 1776 Type 1 buildups can we tolerate? How ma>>
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!
I have both current issues of the "U.S." magazines in front of me... maybe it's bilnd loyalty ?
yes - the ratio of advertisers to articles is disproportionate- hey - a magazines gotta generate revenue to stay in business but geez.....I've been a subscriber to Volksworld for 5 years now and pick up Supervw/Total Vw etc. whenever possible...
A couple of years one of the US mags published an article on building a type4 motor for install in a type3.......1st article published...almost a year later....2nd article.............who noticed it ? not too many dang people...but I did.......right then and there I decided to build one up....no more mention of it from the magazine....I built it...I installed it in my car...now ?...now all of a sudden it sounds like a good idea...everybody wants to do it.....fresh ideas......different cars.....different looks...the world does not revolve around "cal-lookers with white window rubber who used to be in the DKP"
<< forward to seeing the expanded coverage of the Type 4 tech series. Keep it coming. I might e>>
It's funny...I check out RAMVA every day - sometimes twice a day...I see the occasional posting here and there...."errrr....wanted.....type4 motor for install in my buggy....."....."what would it take to put a 914 motor in my bug ?"......people are noticing....they're dipping their toe in the water....it's happening.......
it's late and I gotta get off this soapbox and have another bee........ooops....
this was about GEX right ? - uhh....I order a doghouse fan shroud from them a couple of years ago and was very pleased with it.....I would'nt take an engine from them if you gave it to me judging by the feedback on RAMVA.
I'm sorry I ranted......but I had too...

GEX???
Ok. YOu all start talking about stuff when go out of town!!!!!
OK, so yes I am the southeast editor at large, so I really couldn't tell about what the editor goes through in CA about that GEX stuff. I am sure that if they are a paying customer, then they run it.
Trends has got better over the past few years(NOT BECAUSE OF ME!!!!!) due to the fact that they brought in a new editor that wanted to make it better! By, listening to want the readers want, and making that change. I myself, am looking for that daily driver/resto VW(no matter what it is!) to place in the magazine. In fact today I did just that same thing. Two Beetles that were driven in to the Fisher Buggies show and shine. A 68 Beetle with a bunch of Creative Car Craft fenders and odds and ends on it, he drives it everyday! I have seen it at several shows over the past year, but somehow, just caught my attention today! Then a 61 Ragtop came in, it was dirty mind you, but a future feature will be in the works for this dude!
Since I have started doing this, I notice everything. When I do a show, I try not to take pictures of the same cars all the time. If I used a particular car in the show I did before and they are at this show, I want even take a picture. I am giving everyone a chance to be in there.
As for the Type IV stuff, yes VWT will become Type IV overloaded soon(even this next issue will have a bunch of stuff in it) Jake has been a tremondous help in getting this done and the guys at VWT want it to happen! Be patient for the Type IV series. We are working on it and making sure everything is 100 % correct. The editor will most likley run them in order, as long as we can get them to CA in time!
Ok, off my soap box now!
