I've heard a lot of conflicting things about them with respect to port size and suitability for modifying with larger valves.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the different model number stock VW heads: 113, 040, 041, 043.

I don't think there is an uncomplicated answer for this, but if you confine it to just 1600cc heads, the generality goes like this:
113 heads were German, 52cc combustion chamber with 35mm inlets and 32 exhaust valves. The upper, outer studs boss' are closed.
043 were German (until production moved to Mexico in the early 80's), 52cc's and came with 33mm inlets and 30mm exhaust (although initially had a combination of 35mm inlets and 32 or 30mm exhausts). The stud boss' are open.
040 are Brazilian and very similar to the 113's except they have 49cc chambers.
041's are not originally VW. They were a deviation from the 040 using a 39mm inlet at inception. They have since been modified to use a larger than 32mm exhaust valve, which caused them to over-heat.
I may have missed some important stuff here, or even fudged the edges a little so maybe someone can refine it for you. I had always understood that the 040's were better from modifying, but I don't know what the general feeling is about that now.

i have a set of 040's and they are better then 044's that are out now becuase the design of the fins keeps the heads cooler then 044's SO IVE HEARD over and over. they are VW castings and not aftermarket ones. If avail. porters say they like to work on 040's rather then 044's for street. just my 2 cents and im not a specialist but this is what i hear from alot of people
