Loose oil pickup tube (update)

Post by 69NoH20 »

Tonight I took off my scat deep sump and noticed that I forgot to fasten down the oil pickup tube. It seems fairly loose and moves around a little bit.

I believe it must of been held in place on a stud but no bolt.

If I just put the nut on will I be ok? Have I done any permanent damage?

the only down side i see to this is since it moves around now, it must be somewhat loose going into the side of the case and can suck up air.
probably not enought to worry about, but if it were me, the motor would come apart and that area would be sealed up again.

Could I try and push it in a little or remove the oil pump and seal it up?

unfortunately, there is really not much you can do with it short of splitting the case so you can move it around.
you could push it in farther, but then loose the mounting tab location for the sump stud. But its probably developed a ridge already and you wont be able to push it in any farther.
and to put any type of sealer on it, it would need to be CLEAN to work. that means degreased/de-oiled.

No need to split case! Pull the front oil plug from where they drilled the oil Passge for the tube. Use a tool to expane the tube in the oil passage, then replug.

Well that sounds like an option.
where might one find a small expansion tool like that?

Also how would I pull the plug. There are two holes on the front of the case that are tapped with nothing in them and the rest are just silver plugs. Not the plugs with that I have seen that you can take out with an allen wrench.

How are you gonna get the plug back in?? iots not threaded and to thread would require a case split to clean all the FOD out of the engine created by tapping....

Hmmm, interesting. I suppose you could get a new plug and pound it in with some JB weld. I would think the area right behind that plug is under vaccuum, so the chance of a blowout is minimal.

You tap the hole, you use compressed air hooked to the OTHER end of the pick up tube to to blow the chips out as they are created.

Aircooled.net sells the correct plug, John may even have the right tool made by VW to expand the tube.

You can make the tool to expand the pick up tube with a concret anchor, get the ones that expand and that are close to the right size. Grind away some material until you have a a raised vee.

Lot of trouble, yes. easier then tearing down a complete motor, yes.

Anyway, that's the best way to correct a loose pickup tube, even on a new case.
