Lifter testing; stage I complete

Post by MASSIVE TYPE IV »

Well, we are past the "failure point" and so far all lifters are running well and none are going flat!!! Thats a great thing because a flat lifter would have really screwed up my results.

Stage I was completed with no break in, and only stock valve springs. As we get further into the test we will add 4 different spring tensions and measure the wear after each 10 hour time span, as well as take pics.

In the end we will be close to 400 pounds of tension over the nose and that should definately show us just how everything is wearing and handling extreme loads at various RPM.

So far we fired up the spintron and let it idle at 800 RPM, no break in! Then took it to 2200, and ran most of the test there because after that my fuel economy goes down hill quick..

What a nice grinding pattern n the first lifter. I imagine that's what a true "centerless" pattern should look like. Not a exploding star look. Tim

One word:

RESIZE!

:P

I like the one with the .024 oiling hole myself!
Anyone got a tiny drill bit I can borrow!

I didn't... I removed the lifters :-) and used a borescope...

Are those gouges around the outside of the bore damage?

No, thats the way the case is machined from the factory. My camera has super resolution and shows it really well...

Yup...my cases have the same marks. Jake...is that an oil hole in the face of that lifter? Does that work? I would think it could cause a potential wear stripe of non-contact on a lifter lobe. Ray

Wow, the resolution is deceiving. It kinda looks like someone hacked at it with a die grinder and it was bouncing all over the place. Looks like it should be blended or deburred? Do they ever crack or have problems there?

UM, Hmmm, and I guess you pulled the cam out of the lifter bore also?

As for the markings in the case, I spent two weeks of spare time,
evening and weekends, deburring the INSIDE of the case and another
1-2 weeks of ST on the outside!

I guess I removed about 1/2 cup of flakes and stuff that COULD
have ending up in an oil gallery or embedded in a bearing shell....

As for cracking and leaking, that prolly would have happened in it's
first life, when the heads hit 500 and oil hit 260-280 while the bus
was climbing a 5 mile hill on a camping trip.... :P

It is WELL worth your time to at least look in there at all the flashing
and knock off all you can, even if you don't have a die grinder.

Heck, I used a $9.99 WalMart special..... ;)

The cam will be inspected after the 40 hours of testing. As long as we don't lose a lifter totally it should look fine and be measurable.
