Type 1 DTM

Will the type 1 DTM become a reality soon. Will it incorporate a thermostat? Available through your canadian distibutor?

No thermostat... The Thermostat addition would make the shroud not affordable at all, as it would double the cost. Those who want a thermostat could use stock components to make their own system rather easily with normal fab equipment.

We are waiting for the current 12:1 test engine to be finished and gain new dyno results and road testing of our new airfoil designs before offering it to the general public. My canadian distributor will be selling them in canada as my representative.

We are currently stepping up production of the fiberglass shells for the shroud and hope to be ready to sell them by the end of September!
It has been a long time coming, but we are on the home stretch now!

Have you worked out a price yet? Or even a range of prices?

Jake,
Remembering your experiences in the past with regards as to how such little changes within the shroud affected the balance between the banks and cylinders heads, what heads did you configure your design for? In other words, were you able to succesfully arrive to a design that will work even with the most restrictive of the Type I heads?

Yep, the more restrictive head- the BETTER it works! I gave up on making it perfect for all of them- it would never happen!

Jake,

Just like you and I knew some months back. 8) Between the Type IV and Type I DTM designs, what similarities/differences can you conclude after all of your tests? :?

Why the need of a "better" fan shroud??
You told me that a "properly tuned" motor doesn't need any extra cooling? So what gives?

Did I suggest this to you for a Type I or a Type 4??

A properly tuned engine definately does cool better, with ANY system.. The stock system has its issues, and its strong points.

A better cooling system is always desired, because "Proper tuning" is a hard thing for most to attain without a dyno or alot of experience in tuning engines.

The Type I DTM is something I had totally given up on, and without the constant emails from those screaming to buy one it would never have happened...

Ever heard of supply and demand?? Thats got a huge part of everything that happens in every industry, and why new things are always being made better and better.

As long as an aircooled engine is on the street, there will be a desire for a proven better cooling system. In this instance we wanted to perfect something that cools the aftermarket heads with fewer cooling fins than stock, better... thats what we have done.

Jake,,
thanks for the clarification... i wasn't aware of the aftermarket heads lack in the cooling fin department. (i'm still new at the VW sceene..) That would definately put the need for your fan shroud system.
What is your opinion on some of these "aftermarket" fan shrouds? You know,, those fancy chrome ones.. i sure would like to dress up my little 1500 compartment, but if those are junk, it sure would be good to know,, as it gets 110+ here in Nor Cal in the summers. I don't really want to melt down my little stocker!
Thanks again.

Just ONE aftermarket shroud (thats not really sold anymore these days) beat the stock system in testing, as well as all the others! it was CHROME!

It took me 7 months to finally even that system with mine, BUT it didn't use a Type IV oil cooler like the DTM does.. I robbed some ideas from that Chrome shroud that unlocked the Type I DTM!

Craigman,
This link will give you an idea of the evolution of the T1 DTM ... as you'll read ... Jake has had many setbacks on the road to perfecting the T1 DTM. The good thing is ... it has now been field tested, refined, re-refined, and refined again (yes ... we've all been waiting patiently) ... just like the T4 DTM ... Jake will release no shroud before its time ...

Damn Jake ... why does he always beat me to the punch?
