Sand,fill or just replace fenders

Hi all,

Got a beetle that the fenders have small little bubbles all over them about the size of a pinhead,I sanded a small spot and it seems like rust indentations but not rusted threw and it's only on the fenders and the trunk lid ,never seen anything like this before.Has anyone else heard of this? Don't know whether to just replace or sand the whole works down and try filling thousands of little pockmarks or what.Any ideas would be great!!!

are they indents or sticking up like a mosquito bite?

Sticking up like mosquito bites in the paint,I sanded a small area and when you get to metal it looks like tiny rust spots indented in the metal itself. The paint does not appear to have any dings or chips on it to cause this.Sorry,not trying to make this confusing.

very interesting! kinda like there's an airpocket between the paint and metal huh!? i'd sand it all down to get all the rust removed and then use a primer/filler all over and then get to work on the sanding! the filler should help protect from more rust and "fill in" the indents enough that they can be sanded smoothe later. if you've never done bodywork before this might be a good learning experience for you! i'm going to eventually replace my fenders too, but for now, i'm doing minor body work on the existing stuff! :D all depends if you have the money to get it done or the time to do it yourself. later and good luck man! 8)

moisture control problem with the air system when the primer was sprayed. Or the primer was wet sanded and painted too soon afterward. The affected coating has to come off and the rust treated. To get the surface flat again, you will need to build up with new primer and sand down. Good luck. I had this happen years ago to a brand new paint job and it was heartbreaking.

Never would of thought of that but can see now how that could happen because the spots are all uniform in size.Thanks for the answer,

I've Seen this before....

Best best take down to metal and prime/seal them right after.....

I have repop fenders and I'm not really impressed with the quality of them..
