Fan bolt

Does anyone happen to know the size of the bolt holding the fan on the generator?
Any way to get it off without an impact gun?

Socket size? 36mm. Impact is the best way. Hard to hold the fan w/o bending it trying to take the nut off manually. Maybe you can take it somewhere to have it done for you.

Bear in mind that even though the nut is huge the thread is only 12x1.5mm, same as on the pulley end. It should only be torqued to ~45lb-ft, which'd be quite possible to get loose with hand tools (and a buddy to hold the fan); unfortunately a lot of people see that 36mm nut, same size as their gland nut and rear axle nuts (which are torqued to well over 200lb-ft) and the first thing they do is break out the heavy artillery....and you end up needing an impact wrench to get it back apart. Don't overdo it on reassembly, it'll save you some grief the next time.

Never had much luck with an impact.
All I have ever done is take the outer pulley off and clamp the inner pulley in a bench vise (it isn't round for a reason). Then take a 36mm socket and breaker bar and loosen that fan nut.

True I have run into many that have been installed way too tight. A drop of locktit on the 6mm backing plate studs, another on that nut, don't get out of control on reassembly.

Limited on tools...

After a QUICK trip to autozone, I couldn't find a 36mm socket. Wait here they are... $16.99? What the %(*@ ? So back in the car and down to sears...$6.99, more like it!
No vise, but grip pliers worked on the front of the generator.
The bolt was a piece of cake. The hardest part was trying to get the generator to stay still....until I placed it against the wall and put my foot on the housing (Cheap vise)!!! lol
I got it all back together. 45 ft. lbs with my torque wrench. Ready to go back in the car.
