New TIV cooling system ready for testing!
This week I'm busy trying to get moved into the new shop and Brent was slotted to assemble an F production 914 full race engine.... Things changed when we hit a huge snag with the race engine and I decided to have Brent make himself more useful and get something done. For our 2005 expansion and my plan to work out we needed to make this a reality.... Its now ready for test and then production!
Here is the scoop... Its a very affordable, total do it yourself kit that will use that AWESOME 36HP style shroud that I found during my testing of the TI engines back last winter!
The goal for this kit is to offer a shroud that basically makes the "Cali conversion" much easier to do with no welding, or perhaps very little welding. We have made some new fiberglass cylinder tins that will incorporate some tricks that Brent and I dreamed up a while ago for better air distribution to the cylinders that normally don't get direct flow from the shroud.
This is just a more glorified version of a Cali conversion! Not everyone needs or can afford a DTM so I decided to yet again fill a Type IV void.
This will not replace a DTM in ease of install, because it is a do it yourself kit. It will NOT provide the cooling of a DTM, nor the balance of cooling. BUT it will make those 1700-2056cc cnversions MUCh cheaper and easier to do and I promise I'll do the best to make it work as well as I can. I actually plan on testing it against a DTM and a 911 shroud just for the hell of it!
So... Brent did an awesome job of mocking it all up and even made it use the standard DTM alternator stand like it was made for it! This takes one HUGE part out of the "Cali conversion"... The only thing we still have to do is fab up an oil cooler housing from fiberglass to fit on the rear of the shroud to make that part easier and better at the same time...
Look for it to be available in January or so, because I'm not going to test this one to death- Its made to be affordable but still offer adequate cooling for smaller, easier to cool engines....
BTW, It will come with its own video as well! it won't be professionally edited like the Bug Me video, but it will show the buyer of the shroud exactly how to make the system bolt on... I might be able to offer some fiberglass surround tins as well to seal it into the body....
Like I said, it won't be as god as a DTM, or as easy or quick to install and we won't use them on our engines, but it will work fine on small stuff and be CHEAP!
David will make us some molds for the pieces as soon as we get the final bugs worked out - Next week...
So, is this good news, or what??

Yep and so does BAS, and so does FAT and so does CSP and so does Stateside tuning...I'm not saying you are copying their idea (your probably going to improve on it ) but doesn't Sharpbuilt already make those
This is more than just cylinder covers! I will sell my covers separately for guys that still want the punishment of doing all the work trial and fit but the overall goal here is ease of fit so ANYONE can do this themselves. This is what the TIV lacks along with cost and its a hump that I have to get us over before this will ever be a wideppread, affordalbe engine alternative for everyone.
Whil other companies may offer these tins, mine are different and have alot of thought put into them, including one air diverter that will make the #2 cylinder not hurt for air so bad as with a normal Cali conversion. (you can just look at the normal arrangement and see this)
The other thing is that no one else can offer you fitting help of these pieces, or a complete kit with a modified 36HP shroud and all the pieces ready to go. All this along with that awesome aftermarket 36HP shroud I happened up on last winter ( I only have 50 of them) Also, none of those other kist use a die cast generator stand with mount bar that fits perfectly- this one will and its my newest updated DTM stand that we designed to be more universal...
I will be testing this arrangement against a normal Cali conversion, as well as a DTM and a 911 during some of my exhaust system testing in the next few weeks once I get moved in the new shop. Like I said, its just going to be effective, not perfect! I'm tired of perfecting everything and hearing people whine about price, when I have to charge that much for something just to pay for the test work!
To clarify- I have not copied anyone elses ideas, this has been happening with this shroud for years many different ways..(It doesn't take a rocket scientist to make some cylinder tins and maximize the arrangement). I'm sure others will be copying mine and thats okay as long as it keeps these cars being converted to TIV power!
The main reason for doing this is to cool those 1911 combos that will be getting sold for what it would cost to build a 1776 TI and that will include cooling and exhaust and maybe even some Kadrons to feed it!
It may be do it yourself- But its complete and very easy! Thats my goal anyway!

i try to be a "pay it forward" kind of guy and it seems that you, as well many of the other members are too. that's why i RELIGIOUSLY log on here.
Kudos to you Jake and your crew.

Sure, NOW you announce it, after I started fabbing mine up for my conversion.
I am wondering about the price for just the alt stand though, as that may be my biggest hurdle in the conversion.
I want quality like the one that came from the factory, so I come to you for this part, as you put as much into your parts as the Germans did in the originals. I don't have a lot of cash, but for the important things I'm willing to pay.

Jake,
This is good news, and I'll tell you why. I had just about given up on my T4 conversion. $$ was just the issue. I know the Cali route was available before, but I really don't have time or place to do it. So looking at $600-$1000 for a DTM was the breaking point on the conversion. I think it's a great product, and I will no doubt get one at some point, it's just not practical at this moment. Add to that $500 for an exhaust (that issue has hopefully been fixed by A-1), $800 or so for heads, and who knows how much $$ for cam and lifters, and you're looking at $2k if you have the longblock already. Now I think it can be done for much less.
One other point I'd like to bring up, and I think you're on that track, is to make the T4 similar to the T1 in that it's an engine you can get into for a reasonable sum, and then add on performance as you go. So instead of a one time investment of $5k, you can start with a near stock 1.7/1.8/2.0 and grow it as you like. The T4 case certainly has an advantage in that category built in. The more the T4 becomes that way, I think the more the conversion will be done.
So sign me up for the first batch. I'll be a guinea pig.
Now if I could only find some domed pistons!

Darn Jake,
I already got the tin and was ready to cut, cut, cut and weld, weld, weld! Man, please get it our ASAP so I do not have to. Anyone need some tin cheap?
Wow and affordable system for my current stocker. I will hold off and wait for you since I really trust your ability to do things right. I plan to put this on a near stocker to play around until I am ready for that Massive 2270-cc powerplant.
Jake, based on our past conversations over the phone, I can honestly say you have a passion for this industry and coming from and mechanical engineer (without much spare time!), I really appreciate your expertise and presence among us.
Hey, if you need anymore spreadsheets, engineering, calculations, or want to just shoot-the-breeze, let me know. I too would like to serve as a guinea pig for this one, count me in.
