leaded gasoline

I am buying a 1973 Transporter and It is in wonderful condition. The man who owned it passed away but took meticulous care of his vw's My problem is that his daughter told me that there were tons of bottles of lead in the vw. It was added to the unleaded gasoline. Now i am not sure if it is real lead cause that is illegal now i think it is prob. a substitute but is it necessary? Please keep in mind when resonding that this will be my first VW and I am researching but i am still a novice. Thanks in advance!
