Stock Type 2 Exhaust into Type 1
Why wont a Stock Type 2 Exhaust fit into a type 1. I have no clue about a bus besides they look pretty cool. Is it clearence issues with the type 1 with the body or what? I was just wondering why a header would not fit. Forget about the heat option. Basically why would it fit in a 72-74 transporter but not a bug? More room in a bus ? Thanks, GLJ

First off, the exhaust system in the Bus was designed to clear the stock fanshroud. If you put that same system in a Bug, converted to upright, it will stick out past the apron. That doesn't include the fact that the muffler is wide and straight, so it's going to act as a poor bumper.
The other side to look at is that the stock muffler is very restrictive. You are better off with getting a header/QP for a Bus and shortening the heaterboxes. You'll get better performance and aesthetically the car will look nicer.
So leave the Bus mufflers to those of us Bus owners.

Anybody have any clues to what kind of exaust header I should be looking for, for the upright conversion?

I think #3319 would work, with a set of shortened 411 head pipes, or shortened heaterboxes (I gave up trying to shorten the heater boxes).general_lee_jr wrote:Anybody have any clues to what kind of exaust header I should be looking for, for the upright conversion?

Here are some pics and measurements of that header... this one came out of a 411, I think. I shortened the head pipes 3". I am going to use the "backbox" from LA Performance instead of this glass pack.
I don't think this one would bolt up to a bug without some cutting... I could verify that for you as I am about to mock up my 65's engine compartment soon. Also, take a look at Joe Cali's car at http://www.nextgen-usa.com/. I think he trimmed his fenders up to clear a similar (dual) exhaust.
