Type 4 stub axle are not the same as the T1-3 style stub axle. I don't have a picture to show the difference, but trust me. Remember that a Type 4 doesn't use a torsion bar with diagnol arms like the T1, T3, 924/44 use. The Type 4 uses a trailing arm with a coil spring.

OK.
Thx.
Thought maybe the stub axle could be similar.
Because torsion or not does not really matter regarding stub axels?

Ummm... Tuna, I think you answered the wrong question.

...most 924/944 trailing arms ARE the same part as a bug (T1)

The 944 CVs/Axles and stub axles will fit PERFECTLY in a bug.
(any of the early ones anyway, the late model ones with the aluminum trailing arms were wider, but WILL WORK if you have fat fenders.

The one missing part is the inner stub at the transmission has to be changed to the thing part or a aftermarket equivalent.

A bus transmission also works fine if you are doing the whole swap at the same time.

The question is: How do bug axles/trailing arms fit the T3?
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

T1 and T3 arms, CVs and axles are the same. For modified stub axles and trans flanges try www.precisionalloy.com

Pile, that's what I have heard, the German Look builders like those arms for the "cool factor" as well as use the 5 lug Porsche disk brakes from the turbo cars........

..question, are the axles longer on the alum trailing arms?
So you think your project is taking forever eh? Well you've got nothing on me.....

Forgot to add, I will vouch for this, I am running 924 (same as early 944) stubs, CV's (both inner and outer) and axles w/Thing drive flanges on my offroader beetle, everything bolts right up like it was meant to be! This is definitely the junkyard way to go for a budget Baja or other limited travel VW based offroader, and the 924/944/Thing (all are Type 4 CV family) can work more angle than Type 2 bus CV's.

EDIT: It's late, and I realized I wasn't in the Off-Road forum.....apologies to all........what are so many offroaders doing in this thread anyway? *yawn*

THx guys.!
I'm now building a 002 tranny with berg600 bus kit and ZF LSD into my squareback.and using type 2 or 4 axels since they are 100mm also.
And for me its easier to get Type 4 stubaxles from a 411 or 412 than to get it from a Thing.MOre donor type 4 than Things here in Norway!
So the conclusion was that they ARE similar to the Thing/late944 stub's with 100mm flange??

Problem is...and this is what Tuna was trying to say...I would bet...is that the ONLY similarities between real type 4 axles (that is 411/412) and anything else...is the diameter and thickness of the joints themselves, and the spline count and size. The shaft length is different.....and...the inner and outer stubs will fit nothing else...anywhere. The 4 speed inner stubs/flanges....those parts that mount the inner CV joint to the tranny,...are unique. The parts that fit the 003 auto are also different...but may fit on a bus verssion of the auto. This is becasue the differential is different on the 4 speed...than it is on anything else. I can't remember if its the inner spline of the output shaft from the diff...or the depth of the hub itself...or the oil slinger/seal cover portion of the flange...but it is slightly different. It may be able to be used or modified....but the outer stub that is at the end of the trailing arm....is a no go from the 411/412. It uses a totally different stub design. The inner flange of the trailing wishbone, that mates to the outer CV....has a larger innder spline and a threaded inner section of the casting. A 9" 22mm bolt sandwhiches two large bearings, a spacer and the outer wheel flange together. These parts will fit nothing else. By the way.....if you happen to remove the outer stub from a 411/412 ....please save the stub and the bearings and racees...if they are good. The stubs....other than in a junkyard....are not possible to get...and the bearings are quite expensive...generally in the $55 range each....and the old ones are much higher quality and can generally be reused if they are clean and un-rusted. These bearings are also only made in one month if the year anymore in Europe. That would be in August.....when everyone is on holiday. The production lines are kept moving by temps. Ray

I just pulled my good'ol Type haynes manual and looked at the drawings.

In that diagram, look at number 19. That's the "Type 4 stub axle". You'll notice it's nothing like the T1/181/3/924/944 stub axle. So, what I was trying to say was that the T4 stub axle IS different from the stub axle used on an IRS Bug.

Am I the only one who's seeing what I see?

Thats exactly what I was saying you were saying...see what I'm saying? Yep...while the type 4 CV joints themselves can be used for something...the outer and inner stub flanges will bolt to nothing else but a 411/412. Ray

Guys, he (sorta) ASKED about 944 axles in his T3.

The "T4 stub axles" topic is throwing you.

But as Ray and Tuna have said, the 411/412 axles and stubs are quite useless for any other use, and the transmission side as well.

OTOH a 411 T4 AUTO would rock in a T3, and fit perfectly, assuming you could get the offset axles or modify the stock ones as I did on my sons bug to accept the T4 joints.(It works OK on the street, but not as strong)

As to "002" transmision--- The Bus one? I have also seen some T1 transmissions referred to as 002... The Bus manual would just work as far as the axles are concerned, it should already HAVE T2/T4 CV flanges.

The bus (002 AND 091) transmissions are the same width flange to flange as a T1, give or take a mm or so.

We realize you are correct Piledriver..but I think Tuna and I are "pinging" on the same issues. In the original post...the note was aout 944/924 and type type CV's....which are generally (but not totally) the same as the type 4 CV's...as noted by the 100mm designation.
About 4 posts down, he then mentioned that getting the stubs from a 411/412 in Norway would be simpler. The CV joints from a 411/412, will work fine as they will also fit late type 2 ...they are 100mm. But he mentioned getting the stub axles from the 411/412...which will not work. Just so you know we are not going any more in-saner or denser than we already are. Ray
