Is it better to provide my own engine case for your kit?

Jake,

I have been looking at getting one of your engine kits for a while. Is it better to provide my own engine case or buy one from you? I do not currently have one but there are ones on Ebay and such every now and then.

Randy,
All the kits are set up for you to provide a complete core longblock that you will disassemble. There are quite a few things that will be needed to complete the engine more than just the case it's self.

These items are things like the oil drain plug, sump plate, case specific hardware, head studs and etc.

The best thing to d is source a TIV longblock of any year and with the aid of the video included with the kit disassemble it and then build it back up with the new parts from my kit.

Jake, I am planning on buying a kit before too long and was planning on getting the case from you. Any chance you might be able to provide the "missing" pieces when ordering a case to make the process a "one stop shop"?

You can get a complete(sometimes RUNNING) engine at a U-Pull-It type place for $50-$75.

There are MANY little pieces that you will need that are a PAIN to source individually and are Type 4 SPECIFIC. Type I parts, need not apply....

There also engines on Ebay for as little as $50 + about $100 shipping(if necessary).

I can supply the extra parts, but they are not catalogged, and I have to charge more for them than most core places would.

I would still recommend fining a core engine and tearing it down for more reasons than one.

Just trying to save some time. I have a new baby and my dedicated VW time is less than it used to be! If my child was a little older, I could get her to tear the engine down for me. That is experience every child should have

That is one reason I haven't ordered a kit yet. My current "shop" is my one car garage. Very soon, I will be moving to a new house and I will have a real shop area again (should have an attached garage for our primary vehicles and a detached shop for my weekend ventures). I am holding off on my next resto until the move. You going up to Rockingham this weekend, Don? That is a very generous offer by the way. I grew up in Columbia and my family still lives there. We might just have to meet up at some point (even though your avatar scares the hell out of me for some reason

).

Kit prices are going up across the board in two weeks. I am absorbing a lot of cost (extra time) to package the stuff correctly and some parts are going up a tad bit due to the fuel issues.

expect a 5% increase across the board on all kits.

Well, I live in a condo, and rebuilt the 2.0L in my bus, the 351W in my Econoline, and just last week, removed the gas tank(just filled!) and replaced the fuel pump, all in the parking lot!

We could tear it down on your kitchen table, if need be!

Seafood huh?......used to occasionally eat at various places in "Merles inlet"...right off Hwy 17...not far from charlston. Some good ...some so so.

Merles Inlet, right below old Myrtle and above C-town. Family use to vacation every summer in 'Cresent Beach next one down from Ocean Drive' in the 50's and 60's. Now they call it North Myrtle.

Now I live in Melbourne, Fl. D-Star, could you drive down and help me with my TIV. I need to get a longblock and do the teardown thing. Watching the 'Bug Me Videos' makes me want to get my hands dirty and I need the experience and engine parts for my kit that I want to buy from Jake.

BTW, seafood down here, when I go out with my buddy; fresh if you know what I mean

Fresh, yea, I know wut ya mean!

Whilst in the Navy, stationed at Great Mistakes, I went *out* with a
shipmate for a nearly month long *fishing adventure* on one of his Dad's boats.

Made good $$$$, but didn't want to even SEE any seafood for a long time!

Melberne is about a 7 hrs drive fer me..............C-Town is an hour.

Just take Jake's video and turn it on and follow it closely, rewinding and
pausing as needed!

I watched it 7 times! Just about memorized it!

I'll keep any eye out for you Sunday, Don. I will more than likely be hanging around the swap area selling some parts and looking for new ones. The bug will not be attending this year, but maybe next. Are you gonna have a car in the show/race?
