wiring mix up

Post by stock60 »

1965 6v bug
i was driving home today and all of the sudden POOF! when i hit the brake the turnsignal dash light comes on. For a while now when i had the flashers on and hit the brake the flashers would stop and the dashlight would stay on (my dash light and flashers areon the same terminal so they light up opposite) but i figured it was because i had a voltage drop somewhere, because when I charged the battery full this wasn't happening.
Also there's a black with green stripes wire hanging loose under my hood.

I haven't checked anything yet, because i had to come in and it's way too hot to go back now, but i'm checking the bentley. any ideas?

Black wire with green stripe is for the RH t'signals (should be one coming out of the t'signal switch pigtail to a junction block that splits to the RF and to the wire going into the main harness for the RR).
One possibility is that you have a bad ground at one of the taillights (that would allow brakelight power to backfeed into the t'signal wiring) but I'd expect some interraction with the running lights as well. You didn't mention anything weird going on with the warning lights so that would seem to exonerate a problem with ignition power making it to the bulb cluster on the speedo.
Check some basics first....remove the t'signal flasher (leave those three wires so they aren't touching anything including each other) and see if the tail and parking lights are all coming on normally, then see if the brakelamps work with the taillights on (look closely at the filaments, the taillight filaments should not go out when the brakelight filaments come on). Don't try to get the signals going until you know the parking & brakelamps are all correct.

I've assumed you have stock `65 taillights with one double-filament lamp on each side that does tail & brake and another single-filament lamp which does t'signal - correct me if that's wrong.

Hey Marc,
Haven't got around to fiddling with it yet, but...the parking lights have never been connected in the front. The tails turn on as parking lights and with the headlights, but the brakelights never work. the turns have stopped working too.
Also, before i had been havinga weird problem with the leftside taillight. it turned out the triple connector in the engine bay had gone bad and the taillight wasn't getting any voltage, but the weird thing was that the light would come on when i pulled the bulb holder metal out, the connector would touch and give a voltage, but i have no idea how there wasa ground connection with the bulb holder off the taillight housing.

The power will go through one filament and when it finds no direct path to ground at the shell of the bulb it'll double back through the other filament and find a ground elsewhere (through the lamps at the other end of the car, usually)...so both filaments are glowing, but one is barely visible next to the other since they have different resistances.

ok i think i'm beginning to understand this. I have a semi-related question now. Since my inside indicator light is at the same terminal of the flasher as the signal bulbs and my inside indicator light comes on (meaning that terminal is grounded) does that mean that the short has broken my flasher relay?

It's hard enough to explain how the indicator light works with the KBL wire connected to 49a when there are no problems in the system, I'm not even going to try to tackle answering that question other than to say that the flasher is probably just fine.
And who said anything about a short? I'm talking about an open ground circuit.

KBL? sorry i said short. but i did mean short in the flasher, because i don't understand where the voltage drop is occuring. For the indicator light on the dash to come on there needs to be less than 6 volts on the other end right? and the tails and brakelights aren't coming on so...where's the voltage going?

If you're waiting for me to answer don't hold your breath. Tell me what happens when you follow my suggestion. There isn't room here to teach a bonehead electricity class.

actually marc, i taught a bonehead electricity class last semester at one of the nation's top colleges :D

Sorry, i suppose you're right. no more questions until i actually find the time to get my hands dirty first.
