Okay this is my first time tearing down an engine. I screwed up and a nut from the cylinder head fell out of my hand and went down the push rod tube into the case. I was not planning on splitting the case, do I need to now or is there a way to get it out. I was thinking getting a thin magnet and sweeping the sump or is there another way?

If you're not planning to remove the heads & cylinders,,, a magnet is probably your only hope. Raise the side that the nut fell into,, that should allow the nut to roll through the pushrod tube and to the other side of the sump. If your lucky, it will fall out the sump plate hole. If not, then it's time to get a magnet rod (or something similar) and go fishing. Good luck.

If it's still in the pushrod tube why would you want to tip it into the case??? Why not tip the engine the other way and let it fall back out? Or if the nut already went into the case, telescoping magnets were invented for just these instances. If the heads are coming off (sounds like it) then just pull a cylinder and piston and you'll have a nice view into the case. --Ryan

Keith if you have never torn down a engine before. please number your pistons and jugs so you know where they go to what home. when they are new it doesn't matter but when they are used together they need to be put together.. And another thing is make sure when you put the pistons back in the arrow is pointing toward the flywheel. IF you can't see it then make sure the number is upright.. If you take this apart without numbering them you may and notice i said may. Be in a jam.. They that wears together stays together..
