What rocker ratio are you using
Hi all, I'm looking for a cam for my turbo engine, but they all seem to come for 1.1 ratio rockers. The thing is that I allready have 1.4 rockers. I would like to know what are you guys using or what's the best set up.
thank you all.
thank you all.

Are you looking for the perfect turbo cam? Or just something that will work just fine.
For that perfect design cam for turbo?s, give Kawell a call, they have all kinds of grinds they have used. And most likely something that will work on ratio rockers.
Or you could just pick a cam and run it.
Look at my motor, with carbs, I run a Engle 125 with 1.25 rockers. I went and bolted a turbo on top with no change and it hauls ass.
Or maybe try one of the new smaller Engle FK-4someodd and see what happens.
I have heard of a few guys running a regular fk-8 with good results.
Good luck.

Thanks Mike for your reply. I did talk to Kawell, but he recomend to go up 1 size on the header(from 1 1/2 to 1 5/8) before I buy the cam. The header he sells it's custom made and it's very expensive(I haven't check any where else to compare price) If you could tell me some other place I could check on that header.
As for the k-8, thats what I have on now. I'm ready to freshen up my engine, that's why I want to change the cam. That K-8 I don't think is running well on my set up.
Thanks again.

I'm in the same boat as you I'm buying a fk-41 ground on a 112 lobe center to go with my 1.45 rockers I was running a k-8 to

Expensive meaning around $500 us dollars? Yea that?s about right. But you get what you pay for.
You can get headers cheaper such as from Car Craft ($260 but size unknown http://carcraftinc.com) and CB performance, but these are stamped out. Car Craft does list custom headers starting at $350.
You could check with Chassis Shop (yes they do VW stuff to, www.chassisshop.com if you get there catalog, you must specify VW catalog) , TG Fabrications (my turbo guy), or even Ron Lummis. Im sure there are a few more out there, but this is all i can remember off the top of my head.
These are all custom made to order places. Not likely they will be much less then Kawell. You have to think about it this way, at least $100 in material between flanges, ubends, collectors. Then lots of cut and fit labor not to mention welding and shop overhead. Say some one charged $20 an hour to cover labor and overhead. This leaves only 20 hours to complete the job. I would guess that labor cost is conservative.
Look at the bottom of this page and imagine the amount of work gone into my header http://tgfab.com/in_the_shop.htm
the other nice thing about custom headers are they are built to the width of your motor. If I wanted to buy a header from car craft, I don?t know if I could have stretched it to match my motor. It?s a good inch wider then stock.
I don?t know what to tell you about the K-8. But I?m sure you told Kawell exactly what you have, and with that info, if he said bigger header, I would say that might be worth a try. They will have forgotten more about turbo charging then most of us know.

thats another good idea, get a cam custom ground, its not that much more expensive then buying one off the shelf.
bad62bug, what did you pay for that cam?

Hi,
Hey Mike, I think I will buy the header. I will call TG fab. and see what they say.
As for the cam, Bad62 do you buy those custom cams direct from the factory (engle)?
Have you guys used Web cams?
I also wanted to ask about my MSD ign.(going off the subject)I have a MSD-6BTM in my car but is not connected to the turbo system yet. I was told that I needed to keep the MSD dist. lock. I'm thincking how is going to retard when under boost if the dist. is lock. Can enyone help me on this.
Thank you.

I'm going to buy it from berg so it's ground on there base circle that?s what engle said to do,
No don't lock out your MSD dist. that?s why you bought your boost retard msd box, full adv. going down the road, and it retards under boost

I actually have some experience with the BTM unit.
We had one on jims car. This made it sooooo much nicer to drive on the street. Before we had the timing stop at 24 total advance. But when we used the BTM we ran the standard 009 with its normal curve up to 35 deg full advance. Then what we did was adjust the box to drop back to 24 deg at 15 lbs of boost. So in our example we asked it to retard .73 deg for every pound of boost. Fairly strait forward.
One thing you might want to do is use an ohm meter to get the setting right.
Im doing this from my bad memory but what I think it was is the dial is set up for 0-3 deg and if you put your ohm meter on it, at 0 deg its 0 oms and at 3 deg its like 300 ohms. So I stuck it on .073 ohms to accomplish what I wanted. Don’t trust the sticker on top. Then once you find what you want ohm wise, you can go down to your local Radio Shack and spend a buck on a fixed resistor and make up a little plug in place of the adjustable unit. We never had a problem with Jim’s moving around, but I helped another guy set his up and he kept coming back with a bad run only to find that his knob moved from vibration or something. We ended up slapping a piece of tape over the knob to solve that problem for the day.
Don’t quote me on the ohms as my memory is not all that good. You will just have to measure it your self to verify.
