"Super 2 Liter" update

Post by MASSIVE TYPE IV »

OK!

Things have really came together with this prototype engine in the past few weeks.. Beth and I spent 2 weekends assembling it and everything went very smoothly. Len completed the heads and they were sent out for a dose of coatings and now i have them back here and ready to install.

Currently we have an assembled shortblock ready for cylinders, pistons and heads. All the math is done- I just have to assemble it and then mock up all the ancillary pieces and get them out to powdercoat. I am doing quite a bit of one off stuff on this engine and its cooling system. This baby is getting a one of a kind Silver Carbon Fiber DTM so we are going to really do some trick contratst to keep with the modern appeal of the Vert it will be going into.

Brent and I just finished our Bell Crank linkage for the DTM and and tghis engine will undoubtedly be receiving the arrangement.

For all of you not up to date with this engine....

The goal is 50 MPG from a 2016cc TIV engine using modern thoughts, processes and the proper gearing. We are using EFI and direct fire ignition to safely make that happen- The end result will be tested in a 1979 Beetle convertible.

Here are some pics of the engine so far- more are uploaded on the home page of my site.

Look for it to be all finished up by the beginning of October at latest and ready for a couple of weeks of hell on the dyno.

8) Will the bell crank linkage be available through the store or maybe as an option with the DTM?

Yep- Thats a torque wrench all right!

I plan on seling the bell crank linkage through the store or as an engine iption for guys with carbs. With my EFI set ups it will be standard- thats why we had to make it up, because the throttle bodies are so much different than carbs and were goofing up hex bar linkage geometry.

Its in testing today on a customer's 2270. if it all works well I'll have the waterjet busy with making some of these parts!

Jake,
I sent you an e-mail but imagine with the engineadmin box staying full you might read this sooner... realizing you don't cotton to changes during a build, still I figure the bell crank linkage may be enough of a bolt-on to ask if we're past the point of being able to figure in for my in-progress 2316... now I'll duck and cover

Its probably too late..... and I have not used it with carbs yet. The EFI Tyhrottle bodies are drastically different than your carbs and thats what prompted us to "Git R done" in the first place.

Jake,

On the "efficiency" theme, have you ever contemplated twin spark plugs?

Jake,

The "Super 2 Liter" project sounds fantastic and couldn't be coming at a better time. If you can meet your goal of 50 MPG from a 2016cc TIV, that would be amazing!

In NY and CT area, I've paid as much as $3.19 per gallon. The news is reporting we might see an .75 increase in anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.

Now, I love HP as much as the next guy, but for daily communting, some sacrifices might need to be made!

My 1.3L Rotary (not the most gas efficient engine, but FUN) only gets about 18-21 mpg, and man, these days, I'm feeling it in my pocket. It would be so great to say that I'm commuting 50 miles per day with a "Super 2 Liter" TIV car because it gets awesome gas mileage! Who needs a Prius?

How long do you think it will be before you get it on the road in the 'Vert?

It may get installed in something other than the vert so I can start the final development MUCH sooner!
These gas crunchs are the BIG opportunity for this engine to shine so I HAVE to get some results ASAP!

Absolutely! I emailed you the other day about recommendations on going for a smaller displacement engine (maybe 2056cc)in a replica Porsche build; perhaps, I should add the "Super 2 Liter" to the request!

I doubt we'll be offering the "Super 2 Liter" as a full build.... Only in kit form.

Darn! Oh well...

Anyway, Jake, hit me back on the smaller displacement engines - I look forward to your advice.

hackett,
I didn't receive an email from you- I don't think anyway!

The 2016 MAY be a possibility as a full build- but it'll cost just as much labor as a 2270 that makes 40HP more... They take the same amount of my time.
