I have a 1970 914-6. A previous owner removed the EEC charcol filter from the fuel tank and though it would just work to vent the fuel tank into the wheel well. Not. So they also removed the hoses from the engine cooling fan to the front trunk and back to the air cleaner.
I am replacing. Was the original setup just the standard fabric covered hose all the way from the engine and back, or was there some kind of metal tubing for some portion, like behind the rocker panels?
Thanks!

If the Six is like the four-cylinder cars, there were plastic lines running along the driver's side rocker panel, behind the black cover panel. These were similar to the fuel lines; they were flexible plastic, but they were a different opaque material.
You could use hose, if you make sure it doesn't chafe, or you could use metal lines if you like. Those lines are hidden from view almost everywhere, so unless absolute originality is your bag just use whatever you can get and work with easily.
BTW, the mid-74 and later cars used a different setup, with a single very small line going through the center tunnel, and the charcoal cannister back in the engine bay rather than the two lines along the rocker panel and the cannister on top of/behind the fuel tank.

Not? Works for me. I'm all for ditching the canister. It's 35 years old, and the charcoal isn't doing anything any more.
I guess venting fumes into the intake is a good idea if you're concerned with the fumes getting into the atmosphere. But I'm not. So the wheel well works for me.
I respect your desire to keep all the stock details in place though, if that's what your car is about.
