If it hadn't been forthis crash Chris would have probably picked up a much better starting position and probably would not have been clipped at the beginning of the race on Sunday. He would have certainly had a much better chance at being a front runner and ending up on the podium..
The guy in the Miata needs a good Georgia style ass beatin!
Here is Chris' car after the thrashin it took at near 100 MPH!
I know of 2 drivers that would have loved to give that Miata driver a beating. Hell I just watched it and would like to get a lick or 2 in myself.
But look at what he is driving. Beating a Miata drivers ass is like whippin' a Special Olympian. You'll get thrown in Hell for beating up retarded kids.
What the F**K was that guy doing???? He should get chucked off the race course for idiot driving like that? Man.... if I was Chris that guy would have been leaving the course in an ambulance! I hope he got black flagged or that race is just a joke.
Can't wait till 2006 when I'll be racing a 914 in the Historic Rally series over here
I feel bad that I let Jake and Len down at the Runoffs this year. They drove up from Georgia to watch us do battle and I didn't even complete one lap in the race. I had a competetive engine that could have propelled me to a top ten finish without a doubt, in the toughest 45 car group I have ever raced in.
After one day of qualifying I was in the middle of the 45 car field, still getting used to the track and the additional power I had. The second day of qualifying was black flagged after only a couple of laps. When it resumed only two more laps were possible before the checkered flag flew on the session. The car in front of me spoiled my only good lap of that session when he slowed unexpectedly as he approached a standing yellow situation for a car in the gravel at the carousel.
The incident you see in the video occurred at the beginning of final qualifying. I had preheated the tires and oil, had a light fuel load and was on my best tires. I was prepared to go fast right away but as you can see someone else had other plans. I actually drove 2 more laps after being hit but found that the handling had been affected. I spent the next two days repairing the body damage and realigning the suspension, and I thought I would have a good race.
I had a good start and stayed close to cars ahead of me. The first 20 cars went into the first turn nose to tail and I was right behind. Entering the second corner I was punted from behind when everyone ahead of me checked up to avoid a couple of spinning cars. I had left room for myself but the CRX driver was not prepared to slow his car before hitting me. The back of the quarter panel was pushed hard against the right rear tire and my crew was unable to pull it away without me losing several laps, so I parked the car.
In 2004 the highest recorded trap speed on the back straight was 121mph in my race group. Based on my gearing and rpm I was getting up to 120mph anyway, on my best qualifying laps. The engine I was using was not set up to be a Runoffs engine, but a full season powerplant built for reliability. Another 5-10 hp would have made my car one of the fastest in F Production.
The driver of the blue/green Miata that hit me in qualifying received stiff penalties for his behavior but that is little consolation. Hopefully he will be thrown out of the SCCA before long. The CRX driver apologized to me as soon as the race was over. It was a racing incident and I did not file a protest.
Sorry for your results. I was looking forward to seeing more of your exciting racing footage, but not this 'exciting' The engine really sounded great though...
Do you ever make it down to Daytona or Sebring? How far south do you come racing?
Jake,
Do you have a link to that specific forum thread where someone is actually thinking the Miata was in the right? I looked all over the SCCA forums and can't seem to find it.
His basic argument seems to be "Chris is a backmarker and as such, by attempting to pass an obviously superior driver, forgot his place, and therefore all that followed is Chris's fault. The Miata's actions are totally justified by the fact that the Miata is faster than Chris, and as such he was entitled to drive in any fasion that suited him. Chris got what he deserved because he got uppity and stepped out of his place in the back of the bus...err, i mean field".
It took me a while to figure that out. Now I have to wash my hands; I feel dirty typing it.
