Rod Sideplay

Post by Stripped66 »

I'm in the mock-up stage to see where I'm at on clearances and I've got a quick question on rod sideplay...

...right now, I've got about 0.009" sideplay between the rod and the cheek (total; not per side). I've read posts where 0.004" to 0.016" is within factory spec for a Type 1, with people leaning towards 0.012" as a good clearance.

Any issues with 0.009" on a Type 4? These rods are 0.003" wider than stock, if that makes a difference...however, they also have oil-squirters built into the rod near the big-endl  just a consideration since oil (and pressure) will be bleeding off through the squirters, especially if you guys think the current clearance does not allow enough oil to move past the rod and crank for typical splash oiling of the cam/lifters.

Jake? Others? Whatchya think?

PS. no, I'm not telling you what rod this is...

I've got no problems having them milled to that; what about oil pressure, considering the oil squirters built into the rods?

How big are the squirters and where are they positioned?

They are a tick over 0.100" in diameter, the hole in the bearing slightly smaller; the port is positioned at the bottom of the saddle in the rod and drilled at an angle towards the side of the beam. These seem a bit large but there are no provisions for a jet and are run this way from the factory (albeit, in an upright position, not flat).

Given their size, I'm inclined to run the tight sideplay since plenty of oil should be shed out this port. Any more thoughts? Thanks!

what are the squirters pointing at when the piston is at TDC?
Bottom of the piston, or side of the cyl?

Since they were NOT a horizontal setup in the initialdesign,
this info might have some play in the matter.

I'd run no less than .007 or .008 (.014-.016 total) per side WITH
the squirters.

If you wish to reduce the hole dia you could try tapping the hole M3 and the using a grubscrew with a 1mm(0.04 in) thro hole.
Just remember to use stud lock or some other high temp adhesive.
