CIS Camper Special's first road trip

Post by NO_H2O »

We packed up the Bus with all the stuff to run the VKG Dyno Day in Tampa for the Bug Jam weekend and headed south. I had driven the bus for a week and it was ready to go. Just before the trip down I got a set of Audi A4 wheels 16x7 with 225/60/16 tires. We got them mounted and they fit great. The larger tire took some of the quickness away but it is still damn quick for a Bus and the extra 5 mph is nice on the hwy. The combo ran flawless there and back. On our first fuel stop (Texeco in Perry GA) we all got what they called 93 octane. Within 5 miles we were all experiencing a 20-30 deg. increase in head temps and I had an injector clog on #1. Thanks Texeco. After pulling the snorkle boot and lifteing the plate to full travel (max pressure and flow to the injectors) with the pump running the clog was cleared. Of course that put about a pint of fuel into each cylinder and the fog when in finaly started moved all the flying insects away for a while. After that it was smooth sailing, at 22 mpg.
What a great combo for a Bus, plenty of pulling power, great temps. Other than Jakes Bus, it is the quickest Bus I have been in. With the 6 rib trans and tall tires it has plenty of top end too.

Dave,

I knew you would love that combo! I have never had a customer buy one of those engines that wasn't extremely pleased with it!

One customer bought one and then bought a second bus just so he could buy another engine!

Dave,

Just wanted to say it was really good meeting you and the other members of VKG last weekend. Just hearing Zen's 2316 crank up was great. The old man across from it in the shade tent ask if that was one of 'Raby's engines' and Zen just smiled and said yes. The DTM really set it apart from all the rest of the other cars :) !

Hope to be seeing you early next spring when I get mine from Jake. I think we will have some fun putting it together and running the you know what out of it.

It was great to meet you too. That Ghia should be an awsome project. I think a Super Hero in a Ghia with the other suspension/brake mods with shock the hell out of people when they see or even just think about what it will do.

Are you using carbs with it? For the money I have in the CIS system I can't think of doing one any other way. I think I spent just over $200 for everything. I did have the ultamate place to scroung up the intake/throttle body/plenum.

They are 2001 Audi A4 wheels 16x7 45 ET with 225/60/16's. I got them on Ebay (local pick up). The center bore needed to be opened up so the bearing caps and stub axle nuts will go thru. I have a machinest freind making center cap extentions (1 inch) for them so I can put the caps on. I have some pix but no way to post them.

Just curious, are they the 5-spoke beauties that were standard on the 2001 A4 2.8?
Thanks,

dstar,
Those are similar to what I was thinking of. The slightly dished center and wider spokes on these are nice, too:

Yes they are the flat 5 spoke wheels. They do look sweet on a Bus. My son is wanting to do a German Look Bus and it is realy his project. The Audi wheels and leather seats from a 2004 Celica GTS have him well on his way. The Raby Camper Secial with CIS and a 6 rib transaxle make for a great drive train too. Now it just needs paint/body/interior and lower it 2.5 inches.
