Smoke from a newbie

Post by Kgeorge1 »

I just purchased a '73 2.0 a few weeks ago in pretty good shape. A few minor rust spots in the rear trunk, polished Fuchs and decent interior. The car has been running great but yesterday after a 30 min run up and down the coast I noticed smoke coming from the engine when I shut it down. I could not figure out where it was originating but seemd to be heaviest around the dual carbs. I realize this isn't much to go on, but before I take it in, any ideas from the 914 gurus?

Oil dripping onto the heat exchangers from a bad valve cover gasket? (smoke then rises up past the engine bay seals?) Check to see if there are any oil drips dangling from the bottom of your cylinder heads by the valve covers.

Yup, that's the most likely cause. Most oil leaks in these motors seem to wind up dripping onto the heat exchangers, where they turn into smoke.

One other thing to check: Are there any open ports on the cylinder heads next to where the intake manifolds bolt to the heads? There are supposed to be hoses there that (in a stock setup) Tee together and are plumbed to the air cleaner. In a carb conversion, they may be plumbed to a "breather box" or a "puke bottle".
