Hi, my wifes 78 convert type 1 is getting out of the shop next week, just got the body done and repainted, and she wants a new console so she doesn't have to hold her cup of Dr. Pepper between her legs while driving. I am looking at installing an aftermarket shifter with reverse lockout and was wondering if anybody has experience with this type of installation without modding the console too much, Have not ordered console yet, it will be just a floor console, probably one of those ABS plastic ones from one of these on-line stores.
thanks for any info y'all might be able to provide.

Re: console & aftermarket shifter
Never used one of those on the floor plastic consoles, but I do have a console in my car.
It is a Scat Pro Car Series center console, and I can't imagine owning a VW without one after having it.If all she wants/needs is cup holders, why not check out the ones that replace the ashtray.Thet are made of ABS,and can be painted to match your dash. You just slide out your ashtray, and slide the cup holders into it's place. When you don't need it you can put it in the glove compartment, and replace the ashtray.Mid America Motorworks sells them. They also sell the consoles you were referring to.Check out their web site, order a free catalog, they have lots of Bugg stuff. Careful with those in the ashtray cupholders!! I got mine yesterday and all it was was a black 2x4 painted black with 2 cardboard cups nailed to it and wrapped in vinel!! If I had known they were that cheap I would have made my own and saved $39.

Re: console & aftermarket shifter
I have a '71 Vert with an ABS console and EMPI shifter with the lock out.....no problems! I didn't use the vinyl shift cover
(boot) that came with the console, just left the one with the shifter, looks okay.
I like the wire basket I've seen in a few cars, anyone have any experience with one of those in a standard bug?
