Converting From 1.8L FI To Carb Help

Post by coolj30 »

I just got a 1.8L 914 and the computer is bad and I do not know much about this type of fuel injection anyway so I took it all off. I have a weber progressive I am going to put on it for now. I have some dual 40 drla on my beetle I am going to put on the 914 once I get a different turbo setup on the beetle. I am just wanting to know if there is anything special I need to do to take the fuel injection system off and run a carb? I know I will have to change the fuel pump or get a regulator. Anything else?

Also what do I do about mounting the throttle cable?

You will also need to do something else..

Like get a cam.

In my humble opinion.. A 1.8 won't run worth a crap with that much carb.

The factory FI cams weren't really made with Carbs in mind.

Shoot over to www.914club.com and ask the same question.

You can also look in the search funtion of the 914club for more data.

this subject has been covered HUNDREDS of times..

And yes it can be done.. And it can be done correctly.

By the way.. How do you know your ocomputer is bad?????

Cheers,

I agree. What were the symptoms that led you to believe the computer was bad? I would put it back and fix it before hacking a carb on there.

Converting From 1.8L FI To Carb Help

The guy I got the car from said the computer is bad, but he was not sure. Plus all the fuel lines on the injectors need replaced. And a carb is simple, it seems like there are a lot of senders and sensors that can go bad and make it run bad. I may put the FI back on, but I may just put a carb on to make it run for now.

Its incredibly rare to kill one of the computers. If its dead...it either usually got wet...which is also hard to do.....or someone did a from dead jump start with an absolutely huge power system. Even that is rare. Ray

If you post the symptoms you can get some help with fixing it right. The FI system isn't really that complicated.

A stock motor with a single carb is far inferior to the stock FI in every way (performance, running quality, mileage, etc.).

You need to do what you are comfortable with. I would just like to see you get the best and quickest solution.

Converting From 1.8L FI To Carb Help

Well I have no idea how to put it all back on now, lol.
I dont know where all the wires go.......

Once I convert to draw through I was going to take my 40 drlas that are now being used on my blow through turbo beetle and put them on the 914.

O.k. ,I have experence with both. DON"T change the F.I. to any carbs!!!! F.I. sorted out is far superior to any cab. If you chang to the progressive carb with out the cam change you will lose about 10 H.P. And it will run like poop when cold up to about 3,500 rpm. It will then clear out and run O.K. Just don,t try to cross a intersection without LOTS of room.
I then changed to 34ITC Webers,Ran better better up to 3,500 ,because of the short manoflds took less time to heat up.
I now have 40IDF Webers, changed to a better cam , i figure I have gotten back the 10 hp i lost + 10 more. A lot of work for that 10 HP .
If this doesn't discourage you , to convert to carbs you will need to change the fuel pump to a lower pressure facet pump, change the dizzy to a 009 . Please retain the F.I.,1st thing I would do is replace all Vacumn hoses , then test the rest of the system. This should take a weekend of leisurely work. All the info on how to do it can be found at 914 .com or Pelican Parts archives. Let me know how it turns out. Dave :D

I agree...keep the injection. There are onlyabout 36 wires. Get the diagram....the wires are numbered at each end. Ray

You can actually use your existing distributor just fine, no one should be subjected to a 009...

But fix your EFI, or at least keep FI. I have a set of 44IDFs sitting in a box, ran great, but cannot touch FI.

I'd suggest what I did if you don't like wires, CIS has ~6, 3 12v, and 3 grounds, not including the fuel pump relay. The only signal line is the tach signal to the fuel pump relay. (If you are comfortable with CIS... )

Works awesome. never have to jack with it.
No more clogged idle fuel jets, ever.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
