Bug guy needs just 2 domed 1.7 P&C's

Hey all

EDIT: SEE BELOW, NOW I NEED A SET OF 1.7 OVERSIZE PISTONS INSTEAD.......

I am reaching out to the 914 crowd with my hat in my hand, and I hope someone has what I *need* sitting in their garage parts stash.

Eddie Brown is building me a 1.7 engine going into, eventually, my beetle. I have a core 411 1.7 engine with replacment dome pistons and 4 worn out cylinders that won't hone to spec. I tried buying 2 used pistons/cyls from a board member but the cylinders went FUBAR in transit so I am back to square 1. :(

The 90.5 conversion is looking technically do-able but would be more expensive than what it's worth for this level engine, basically a type 4 putt-putt with a cam close to a web 73. I have rebuilt rods that are finished that would have to be re-redone and rebushed, adding $$$ to the process. :cry:

At this point it would be cheaper to go to 96mm and do a 1911 or 2056 but I have good 1.7 heads that I don't want to add $$$ to for the bigger engine if I can get away with building a 1.7 for now.

I have 2 brand new Cofap 1.7 domed pistons and cylinders in the box and I just need 2 more for a complete set.

Anyone have 2 new 1.7 domed P&C's they would sell me? Pretty pretty please?

just for the heck of it...they may not have any more of these...but try Kerr Automotive in Oklahoma city 405-232-9581. This is the most comphrehensive foreign parts house I have ever seen. Last year...I bought a full set of 90.5 (first oversize)...1.7L domed pistons,rings and pins....made by Repco in Australia ...for about $125. They are actually decently made. They are copies of teh Mahles. Ray

Update: Kerr automotive has just 1 set of 1.7 pistons left, they are .040" oversize (91mm), and they are...................DISHED! :evil:

Change in plans and change in request:

Anyone have 1 set of 1.7 oversize pistons in either 90.5 or 91mm DOMED they are willing to part with? I can bore and hone my worn 1.7 cylinders to either 90.5mm or 91mm for a fresh finish, they are gennie VW and worth using.

C'mon, 914 guys are supposed to toss 1.7 stuff out daily! :lol: :lol: :cry: :cry: :cry:

The oversize pistons are pretty rare from what I have seen. The 1.7 stuff was "throw-away" for so long, and the "conventional wisdom" was to always just replace the P&Cs anyway, so few people actually bothered with the oversizes.

I count myself lucky to get one of the last sets of those first oversize repco domes from Kerr in OKC. Yeah..its sad what we all used to throw away.
Tell ya what I do have. I have a set of very nice.....84k miles from a spic and span engine....1.7 domes. They each have a small dent from the exhaust valve on the edge of the dome. The ring lands are nice. The engine was never locked up. This was the engine that crapped out teh cam gear on teh oil pump...so it lightly bent each exhaust valve. They have no scoring. They were from a 1995 brazilian Cofap cylinder set...but they are stamped Kolbenschmidt. I have been saving them. But I will probably never use them. If I build anothjer 1.7 after the one I am building now...I will have customs made. I have not measured the skirts for collapse. There was never any piston slap at all. The engine recieved 39 oil changes in 84k miles. You would need new rings.

Yes...I have the cylinders also. Do you need them as well? I was hoping to hang on to them......but since I have a good set of German ones to use I could let you have them. The cofap cylinders date to about 1994...and are very straight. Still have hone marks in them. Ray

Ray, my current cylinders are worn around .005" over and they are beyond just a hone job so I would need to go to oversize pistons to use them.

Thanks for the offer, but if you have a complete P/C set, keep them.......they are getting hard to find after all.

You could have them resized to 90.5mm and get type 1 pistons and a crank that uses T1 rods. That way you can take advantage of the lighter weight and stronger bolts of the High performance T1 rods. Or you could give it more stroke while your at it.

Russ, thanks for the suggestions, but the whole plan for this engine was a budget buildup. 34 ICT carbs, stock bus intakes, homemade header.....you get the idea. :wink:

If I can get the engine together I have a chance at having a running engine soon out of the effort vs. waiting for more $ to be available (like that ever happens).

I have a 2.0 crank/rods in the garage for a future $$$ engine.
