Hit and run

A nieghbors kid side swiped a customers one owner 1988 Jetta that was parked and ran off.

I found some perfect doors (before the hail storm) but of course they were black.
Saturday I stripped the doors to a shell and painted the insides.

I did not get to far today but they are on and I roughed out the front fender.

While not visable the impact cracked the bondo and paint on an old repair to the drivers C pillar.

I drove to this town and picked up a BMW.....
Pretty bad shape...
After 3 days(and parts from at least 3 more cars) of work(OK, one day waiting for paint to dry)...
This is just a hobby for me....it is satisfying to build something.

Not much accomplished today. Since I don't have my heat lamps anymore I'm letting the Marson's ureathane primer surfacer dry 24 hours. Plans are to spot and blend the front fender then install the drivers door.
Evercoat 2 part spot putty. Great stuff. It does not shrink.

Note the old damage to the edge of the fender that was hidden by the wheel opening moulding.

BEAUTIFUL! I need somebody to spray the color on my bug, you up for it?

I'm not a pro painter, I know that and can live with it since most of the time
I paint cars that will be OK with a "10 footer" paint job.
I painted my bug once, but didn't like the results, so I sanded it all back down
and re-primed everything and am ready to get the color sprayed again.
Heree's the kicker, if it was regular paint, I would be OK, I'd just keep spraying
and then just color-sand it back down to perfection.
I'm using 2006 Ford Mustang Laser Red Met, with pearl in the clear. Problem is
that this is TINTED paint and even after 3 coats, you can still see *through* it
and thusly the shading has to be perfect.
Don't know if *I* want to try my hand again or not, most likely NOT!
I got a pro to look at it, all he has to do is spray the color and clear, and he
quoted me EUR800, about $1200.
PAINT is EXPENSIVE in Europe!

If it is done in a clean down draft paint booth with the correct paint guns that would be worth it. You might check out the trades schools that teach body shop skills. Painting out side or in an old booth requires quite a bit of sanding and buffing. Many paint stores sell a small piece of paper with a black and white checker board that gets taped to the masking paper. It lets you know when paint coverage is enough. All that is moot unless you have a steady hand along with real nice $400 plus paint gun with a perfect spray pattern. Base coats and clears often require changing gun internals to compensate for different viscosities.
