Check out the options:

new 2.0 L kit, bolt in solution, but expensive -- I think its a 2.0L Jetta engine. Its the same engine that "Caravelle's" (Vanogon by another name) have in South Africa.

How about a GTI engine? With a Diesel, you can swap the oilpan and a few other key components to lay a rabbit engine on its side back there. Check this out:

I think you're already set up for the inline 4 water cooled physically - just the electrics and fuel stuff.

Course, if I had unlimited time and money (who does) I'd swap in the TDI and have the ultimate van (IMHO). Good luck!
